As an environmental science educator my role is to make my students aware of the many problems plaguing our planet. For years we used to teach science concepts in a vacuum of facts and figures, but we now recognize the power and need of stories, story telling and photography to make students and people everywhere aware of the environmental and social issues that require attention and a much needed motivation to take action. I have been a fan of Mr. Brandt's work for years and have used his powerful b/w images in class often to both tackle conservation issues, as well as demonstrate the power of photography in exerting positive change and a sense of empathy and communal push for change. This latest work titled This Empty World is truly a moving, haunting, brilliant and much needed series. I was blown away by the "show, don't tell" thematic direction of the work, where the images are the next step in the evolution of Mr. Brandt's environmentally-focused photographs; the images are in color, their mis-en-scene brilliantly and dramatically composed and the technical aspect that anchor the inception and execution of some images nothing short of breathtaking. I look forward to sharing this in my courses as a call to action and a new way to add a much-needed, compelling visual narrative students can explore. I know this work's impact will be iconic and deeply effective- just as iconic and impactful as Mr. Brandt's previous images of African mega-fauna. We can expose students to the science of conservation and biodiversity issues, but we must also appeal to their sense of wonder and inspire them to dream for a better world they can aspire for through action, communication and change.
Nick Brandt's work just keeps getting better and better. With each new book Mr. Brandt's gorgeous, thought provoking photography continues to inspire. Each compelling image has so much to offer on so many levels. If you are lucky enough to see these photographs in person, you can easily see how they compare to some of the finest painters' paintings through the centuries. We are so lucky to have someone on this earth who is so talented and who cares so much about animals, the earth and people - working so hard to capture life - pushing us to see the beauty we have and asking us to not ever let this beauty go. Buy all of his books if you can! You won't be disappointed.
I have admired the photographer's work for awhile and absolutely love the book. His work is fascinating and powerful. I will be buying it for gifts for my photographer friends and my animal loving friends!

Each photograph is a call to action, a reminder that although humans are the main cause of the destruction and displacement of these magnificent animals, we have many opportunities to save them. This Empty World is a brilliant collection of haunting images and Mr. Brandt is an exceptional storyteller.
